Born in Hungary, Denes Agay studied piano and composition at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. By 1939 he had migrated to the USA, where he has worked ever since earning an international reputation as a piano teacher. He arranged these dances for wind quintet in the 1950s – while they are easy to listen to, they are also fun to play, making the most of the quintet ensemble. The faster ones are lively, and the slower ones are romantic as slow dances should be.
