Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was born into the family of pharmaceutical manufacturers that is now the multinational Rhône-Poulenc company and therefore never needed to earn a living.
He began learning the piano at the age of five and took composition lessons in his twenties.
The Novelette in C is an arrangement of a piano piece for wind quintet.
It is a short one-movement work in which Poulenc employs his gift of lyrical writing to delightful effect.
